The ‘bourg’ of Plourhan itself is
an example of everyday life unaffected by tourism.
It is the hub of country lanes leading like spokes to everywhere you
might wish to go, and the handsome floodlit Town Hall and flags flying
are a welcoming sight on your return.
No ‘problème’ to park right outside the scrumptious bakery to get your
croissants and all kinds of interesting (and healthy) bread, or pop into
the friendly post office for the right stamps for your holiday
postcards, before heading off inland for a change.
Leaving the cottage in the general direction of the golf course you are
again spoilt for choice.
As you travel inland towards the city of Guingamp (/gan- gone/), you
will see that places are signposted in Breton (related, among other
languages, to Welsh, for example ‘gwen’= white).
You might make for the ‘petite cité de caractère’, the delightful
Pontrieux (not Portrieux this time).
From
Pontrieux you could visit the Château de La Roche Jagu with its
beautiful gardens and views and a long, varied season of cultural
events.
Or you could go straight on, deeper into the wild heart of Brittany.
